Members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated are worried that insufficient access to technology could put multiple students in certain economic areas at a great disadvantage.
Remote learning started in mid-March and shifting to online education to limit the novel coronavirus began. Teachers giving lessons through google classroom through video conferences was something new. Some members of the Westchester Alumnae Chapter who are educators shared that they are also uploading materials to online learning platforms such as Schooly, or directing students to educational YouTube videos. Without an electronic device many students are missing out on instructions.
Nevertheless, there are students who are unable to participate in certain households. Sharing a device is an uphill battle. Some districts provided households with a device. Many cheered. But, numerous households have three, four, or even seven students residing under one roof. Sharing a device is a gradual shipwreck. The Executive Board, Social Action Committee, and Membership committee had several meetings including Zoom which is needed while social distancing. Collaboratively we realized that children who lack their own electronic devise plus internet also lack access to education.
Many schools are letting kids borrow devices for digital learning during the crisis. On Thursday, May 14, 2020 the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated with other community contributors from Kristen Newland friends & family, Lisa Somner-Sams, activist Reggie Buggs and Tha Brown Urban Mother Partnership distributed tablets to children. Students in Mount Vernon, New York received their tablet gifted to them. These students are still on the list and are waiting for their name to be called by the school district.
We know that Education and poverty are perplexly entangled. We also understand that our children are predisposed to an abundance of obstacles at school and at home, restricting their possibility for educational success.
