Tha B.U.M.P Supports Books Over Candy

This Halloween, I stayed home and intentionally gave out bags of new books for the little ghosts and goblins. Giving out books instead of candy on Halloween is a creative alternative that promotes reading and can be a healthier option. This is not my first time using “Treat & Read Day.” I hesitated about giving books out today and almost went to the store to buy sugar. But I’m in love with children building their home libraries. I hope this idea gains traction to inspire children’s minds and provide a different kind of treat that lasts longer than sugary candy.

We must intentionally create conversations with children about reading. This conversation is always needed. Children have much to gain from having a lot of books at home. We need to encourage our children to read. We can accomplish this task when electronic devices have replaced the handshake. We know our children are digital natives, and statistics indicate that a book-filled home encourages a culture of reading.

We know that interrupting oppression begins with the understanding that reading is a weapon. I believe in equipping our vulnerable young readers with the weapon of reading. Cynthia Turnquest-Jones stated, “We realized that just telling our young readers that it’s important to read isn’t good enough.”

Happy Treat & Read Day!
